<ns1:description language="en">This thesis explores the relationship between Comics and melancholy. It poses questions about the role of Comics in contemporary discourses about melancholy and the way comics can be deciphered through the perspective of melancholy.
In order to do justice to the complexity and the cross-cultural dimension of the term melancholy, approaches of western and eastern intellectual and cultural history are explored, as well as the influence of the concepts shaped in the melting pot of the Muslim, Jewish and Christian tradition in Al-Andaluz during the 10-15 Century, which are also reflected in Dürer's engraving Melencolia I, a work that is considered to be fundamental for shaping a vocabulary of melancholy.
A special focus of this thesis lies on the analysis of the life and work of George Herriman and Charles Schulz, whose comic strips "Krazy Kat" (1913-1944) and "the Peanuts" (1950-2000) have been essential for the emergence of an intellectual tradition among Comic-Authors, in which melancholy plays a vital role, both as a central theme, as well as on a meta-level.
