<dc:title xml:lang="en">What Presence: Epistemology, Technology and the Supernatural</dc:title>

<dc:description xml:lang="en">This thesis considers the forms of speech, evaluation, and evidence which surrounded the Spiritualist movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and what legacies have continued into our modern cultural and epistemological landscapes. The first chapter ‘Apparition’ details the scope of the thesis, exploring its context and remits. The second chapter ‘Voice’ explores the speech of the mediums themselves, and how these testimonies relate to the concept of parrhesia, particularly in the Foucauldian definition. Examined within are questions of the medium as a unified Self or as an amalgamation of Self and Other, as well as the dangers provoked by the medium’s testimony from outside forces–legal, medical, and patriarchal. The third chapter, ‘Spectacle’, focuses on the performance of the séance itself and the ways in which mediums and manifestations were tested by both those attempting to prove their veracity or expose their fraudulence through the photographic image. Considered here are the problematics of empirical evidence with regard to insubstantial phenomena, as well as the advent of new technologies and the advancement of lens-based conceptions of truth. The fourth chapter, ‘Echo’, traces the path of the supernatural forward through technological advancement and uses Derrida’s concept of hauntology to evaluate how the supernatural, and the histories of spiritualism and the séance, shape our theories of reality today. It is concluded by the epilogue ‘Manifestation’ which details how this research and my artistic practice have influenced one another. This thesis contemplates how the supernatural and the epistemological entwine and what truth or truths we may be able to conjure from the dark hubbub of the séance room.</dc:description>
