"Les Mots" läßt sich grob in zwei Hälften teilen: die Karte und das Werkzeug, um sie zu erstellen. Werkzeug/Sonde, um die Verbindungen der Begriffe zu erfassen ist die Assoziationskette. „Les Mots“ wählt zufällig aus dem bereits Bekannten einen Begriff und bittet den User, ihm die erste Assoziation dazu zu nennen. Daraufhin die nächste Assoziation zu dem dadurch erhaltenen Begriff, usw.. Die Topografie der Karte entwickelt sich aus einem pseudophysikalischen Modell: zwischen Begriffen, die miteinander assoziiert wurden, spannt sich eine Feder mit der relativen Kraft der Häufigkeit dieser Assoziation, Begriffe untereinander stoßen sich aber ab. The tool to collect the connections between terms is the "associative chain". "Les Mots" randomly chooses a term and asks the user to input her first association to it. Furtheron the next association to this and so forth.
