Restauriergeschichte, Provenienz und Zuschreibung From the St. Jerome to the Belisarius. Conservation of a baroque painting on canvas of Gian Domenico Cerrini from the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. History of conservation, provenance and attribution: The severely damaged large-sized Baroque oil painting on canvas which, since the 19th century has been titled "St. Jerome" requires extensive conservation which is accompanied by scientific investigations and examinations with X-ray, Infrared and UV-Light. The practical work was focused on closing numerous tears in the canvas, consolidation of the paint layer and the removal of old fillings but considered the old lining of the 18th century. The eventful history of the painting’s conservation and presentation in the Imperial Gallery is researched. Important information was provided by the Storffer inventory of 1730 and a glue-paste-lining signed in 1774 by Joseph Hickel. In the course of the work the depiction is identified as the Byzantine general Belisarius and the painting received a new attribution to the Italian painter Gian Domenico Cerrini (1609-1681). Das ausgeprägte Schadensbild eines großformatigen barocken Ölgemäldes auf Leinwand, das seit dem 19. Jahrhundert als "Hl. Hieronymus" betitelt wurde, erfordert eine umfangreiche Konservierung und Restaurierung, die von naturwissenschaftlichen und strahlendiagnostischen Untersuchungen begleitet wird. Schwerpunkte der praktischen Arbeit waren die Schließung zahlreicher Risse im Bildträger, die Konsolidierung der Malschicht und die Abnahme großflächiger Kittungen unter Beibehaltung der Doublierung des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die bewegte Restaurier- und Präsentationsgeschichte des Gemäldes in der k. k. Gemäldegalerie wird erforscht. Anhaltspunkte sind das Storffer’sche Inventar von 1730 und eine 1774 von Joseph Hickel signierte Kleister-Leim-Bügeldoublierung.
