In her installations and photographs, Irene Hopfgartner is devoted to representing and staging nature. Our perception of the naturalness is based on a cultural construction. Purposeful interventions in nature, its shaping and taming, coined our environment for many centuries. Manipulation of nature - flora and fauna - is so overarching that we mistake the artificial environment for the natural. Recording, investigating and visualizing nature serves the process of acquiring knowledge on the one hand while it yields reassurance and representation of hierarchy between human beings and 'nature' on the other hand. Gabriele Rothemann winter term 2014/15 2014/15 Wintersemester Irene Hopfgartner beschäftigt sich in ihren Installationen und Fotografien mit der Repräsentation von Natur und der Inszenierung des Natürlichen. Unsere Vorstellungen von Natürlichkeit beruhen auf einer kulturellen Konstruktion. Gezielte Eingriffe in die Natur, die Gestaltung und Bezähmung derselben, haben unsere Umwelt über Jahrhunderte geprägt. Die Manipulation von Natur, von Flora und Fauna, ist so übergreifend, dass wir die gestaltete Umwelt als die originale annehmen. Das Aufzeichnen, Untersuchen und Veranschaulichen der Natur dient einerseits dem Erkenntnisgewinn, andererseits der Vergewisserung und Repräsentation der Hierarchie zwischen Mensch und Natur. Die Musealisierung, das Bewahren von Gegenständen und Artefakten birgt die Idee, die Vergänglichkeit und Entfremdung zu überwinden.
