OSKAR NIMMT PLATZ Barbara Putz-Plecko Herwig Turk summer term 2018 Oskar nimmt Platz was developed within the framework of the master degree program Social Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The Project represents a prototype for programming public space and an open format for ‘taking place’ through art and artistic interventions. With the objective of using the square in front of the University, taking the educational institution into the street and capturing the space for a certain period of time, the project was initiated by the University board that invited the Social Design studio for that challenge. The historical and sociopolitical functions and responsibilities of university squares informed the project and grew through the current political situation. Oskar took place and was developed as an open platform for the University of Applied Arts Vienna, artists, and people with public interest, art initiatives and citizens. Various departments of the university and parties involved developed contributions which then came together on the site. A multidisciplinary team and countless supporters made the project possible and transformed the street into a new place. The project serves as a prototype for programming public space and has made the potential of Oskar Kokoschka Square tangible. Special thanks go to Herwig Turk and Barbara Putz-Plecko, the supervisors of the project, Gerald Bast, supporter and initiator, and to all participants who let Oskar take place through their commitment. Master container Master Lena Kohlmayr 2018 Sommersemester Oskar nimmt Platz ist im Rahmen des Masterstudiums Social Design an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien entstanden. Das Projekt stellt eine prototypische Bespielung von öffentlichem Raum und ein offenes Format für das Platz-Nehmen im Sinne einer Aneignung von Raum durch Kunst und künstlerische Interventionen dar. Mit dem Ziel, den Vorplatz der Universität für angewandte Kunst zu nutzen, die Bildungsinstitution nach außen zu tragen und den Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz für einen bestimmten Zeitraum einzunehmen, initiierte die Universitätsleitung dieses Projekt und betraute das Studio Social Design mit dessen Realisierung. Die gesellschaftspolitische Funktion und Verantwortung von Universitätsvorplätzen, von Beginn an Thema, ist durch die aktuelle politische Situation immer mehr in den Fokus gerückt. Oskar nimmt Platz verstand sich als offene Plattform für die Angewandte, KünstlerInnen, Personen mit öffentlichem Interesse, Kunstinitiativen und BürgerInnen. Verschiedene Abteilungen der Universität haben Beiträge erarbeitet, die am Platz zusammengefunden haben. Ein multidisziplinäres Team und unzählige UnterstützerInnen haben das Projekt ermöglicht und die Straße zu einem neuen Ort gemacht. Die Bespielung hat die Potenziale des Oskar-Kokoschka-Platzes greifbar gemacht und dient als Prototyp konkret für den Platz, sowie allgemein für das Schaffen von Öffentlichkeit durch ein Platz-Nehmen mit künstlerischen Formaten.
