University of Applied Arts Vienna SHADOWS OF OUR ANCESTORS Diese Arbeit untersucht die Rolle von ekstatischem Tanz, Karneval und Maskierung innerhalb von Gesellschaften in verschiedenen Zeiten und Regionen aus der Perspektive von Bakthins Karnevalsanalyse und dem situationistischen Konzept der Gesellschaft des Spektakels. Es ist klar, dass es einen wichtigen Unterschied zwischen karnevalesken Praktiken in der zeitgenössischen kapitalistischen Gesellschaft und dem Karneval des Mittelalters und den Ritualen der Stammesgesellschaften gibt. Durch das Fehlen eines kollektiven Körpers werden Gemeinschaft, Karneval und Ritual auf eine kommerzielle Reproduktion kapitalistischer Strukturen reduziert. Um sich eine neue Gesellschaft vorzustellen, muss man sich diese Aufgabe zu Herzen nehmen. Unser bestes utopisches Denken muss den blinden Fleck akzeptieren, den der Karneval darstellt: das Widerspenstige und Chaotische, das nicht geplant werden kann und darf. This thesis looks at the role of ecstatic dance, carnival, and masking within societies in different times and regions, from the perspective of Bakthin’s analysis of carnival, and the Situationist concept of the society of the spectacle. We will see that there is an important difference between carnivalesque practices in contemporary capitalist society, and the carnival of the Middle Ages and the rituals of tribal societies. Because of the lack of a collective body, a community, carnival and ritual is reduced to a commercial reproduction of capitalist structures. Envisioning a new society requires taking this lesson to heart. Our best utopian thinking needs to accept the blind spot that carnival represents: the unruly and chaotic which cannot and must not be planned.
