Durch diese ursprünglich im Film verwendete Methode der Klangspeicherung und Wiedergabe wird durch Transformation die visuelle Vorstellung von Klang vertont und vice versa. Im ersten Transformationsschritt werden die Bilder einer subjektiven Vorstellung von Musik gesammelt, welche geometrisch, abstrakt oder in Ornamenten angeordnet dargestellt sein können. Diese visuellen Ergebnisse werden auf 35-mm-Filmmaterial aufgemalt – und zwar genau an jener Stelle, an der sich üblicherweise die Tonspur auf einem 35-mm-Filmstreifen befindet. Im zweiten Transformationsschritt wird, um nun die eigene Vorstellung von Musik – aktuell als Bild dargestellt – wieder hörbar zu machen, der Filmstreifen über den Lichttonabnehmer abgetastet und so die seinem inneren Bild entsprechende Musik auf völlig neu gestaltete (= klingende) Art wiedergegeben Pentavox is a sound installation. Powered by optical sound-head systems borrowed from film projectors, five apparatuses stream forth images translation into sound. The process follows sound storage and repetition, as a method originally used in film, to bring a visual quality inherent in sound into resonance. In the first translation stage, images of a free idea of music are collected. These respond to subjectivities and may appear in the form of geometrical, abstract or an ornamental arrangement. To proceed, the illustrations are painted to add on to the 35mm film – very precisely at the point at which usually the soundtrack is located. In the second translation stage the filmstrip gets scanned over an optical sound head, which allows the picture soundscape, as currently only imagery on display, to become audible again.
