The Curb Cut Effect, named after Michael Pachovas’s intervention of pouring cement to create slopes in Berkeley, California in the 1970s, refers to the phenomena in which accommodations that work for people that need them are appreciated by other groups of people in society. In living in a society, we create structures and systems that facilitate the participation of people, which includes special accommodation needs. The library is a pocket of society, housing heritage, information, and services open and accessible to the public, and has many aspects related to creating a library for the public. That being said, there is a gap in this problem-solving framework, one which leads to exclusion of people. This gap creates a vicious cycle in which exclusion is addressed later, and then returning to this problem-solving framework where the gap still exists, which leads to exclusion being addressed later, and it repeats. This thesis aims to name this cycle of exclusion by looking at how the public views libraries in their minds and their accessibility by gathering public opinion using a doll house that illustrates the current outcome of this framework that we use, and a research-based approach that dives into possible learning opportunities of accessibility, the mindset related to the access and exclusion of people, and what designing for the people looks like. It concludes that there are opportunities in learning about accessibility from the perspective of the public, but whether these opportunities are taken is ambiguous, both due to awareness and transparency of the process.
