Die Fußnote wird mit Wissenschaftlichkeit assoziiert, weil es ihre Aufgabe ist, den Weg von Informationen nachvollziehbar zu machen, Ideen und Quellen sorgfältig auszuweisen. Im Fokus steht, wie sich durch Fußnoten Hierarchien und Wissensweisen festschreiben, die davon zeugen, wie Wissen (re-)produziert wird und wo Deutungshoheiten für kanonische „Haupttexte“ liegen. Das untersuchte Material bilden wissenschaftliche und zeitgenössische, experimentelle literarische Texte, die mit Bezugnahme auf queer-feministische und post_koloniale Theorie analysiert werden. In den vier Abschnitten Wissenschaftlichkeit – Lesen – Positionieren – Schreiben werden Bedingungen der Produktion und Rezeption von Fußnoten erforscht und Lese-/Schreibgewohnheiten hinsichtlich der Topografie einer Textseite und der erlernten Anordnung von Zentrum und Rand befragt. Diese Herangehensweise greift zweierlei Metaphorik auf: die Fußnote als körperliche Metapher und als Bezeichnung für Nebensächliches und Untergeordnetes. Wer befindet sich außerhalb einer Erzählung? Deutlich wird, dass die Fußnote ein gedankliches Abdriften oder Weiterspinnen eines linearen Haupttexts fördert, sogar beabsichtigt. Deshalb schlägt die Arbeit eine Poetik des Abschweifens vor, die dieses Weiterverfolgen eines Details, eines Gedankenstrangs, einer Fußnote nicht als etwas versteht, das von fehlender Aufmerksamkeit zeugt, sondern vielmehr als Bewegung, von der aus sich Fragen über das Lesen, Denken und Schreiben im Kontext von Wissensproduktion selbst entrollen. This thesis examines the footnote, a form of written annotation positioned at the bottom of a page and linked to a passage by a reference sign. The footnote creates a web of references, which is why the methodological approach of this thesis is interdisciplinary and many voiced as its subject. The footnote is associated with scholarship as its role is to trace the path of information, to carefully identify ideas and sources. The analysis focuses on how footnotes establish hierarchies and ways of knowing, how knowledge is (re)produced and where interpretive sovereignties for canonical "main texts" lie. The material studied consists of scholarly and contemporary experimental literary texts that are analyzed with reference to queer feminist and post_colonial theory. In the four sections Scholarly – Reading – Positioning – Writing conditions of the production and reception of footnotes are explored and reading/writing habits are questioned with regard to the topography of a page and the learned concept of center and margin. This approach follows two kinds of metaphor: the footnote as a bodily metaphor and as a description for the marginal and subordinate. Who is outside a narrative? It becomes clear that the footnote encourages, even intends, a mental drift or spinning on from a linear main text. Therefore, the paper proposes a poetics of digression that understands following a detail, a strand of thought, a footnote not as something that testifies lack of attention, but rather as a movement from which questions about reading, thinking, and writing in the context of knowledge production unroll.
