  <dc:description xml:lang="deu">Trotz unseres kausal-funktionalen Weltbildes
haben Rituale immer noch enorme Bedeutung.
Ritualartige Praktiken aus den Bereichen Psychotherapie,
Migration, Jugendkultur, Social Networks,
Kunstmarkt und Konsumwelt wurden dahingehend
überprüft, ob es sich um gewöhnliche Alltagshandlungen
oder um neue Rituale der Konsumgesellschaft
handelt. Nach einer für diese Arbeit
erstellten Definition können fast alle Beispiele
als Rituale bezeichnet werden oder zumindest
als neue Formen ritualisierten Handelns.
Letztlich lässt sich auch Shopping als modernes
Ritual darstellen.</dc:description>

<dc:description xml:lang="eng">Although it is often stated that our causal-functional world view has led to a decline in rituals, ritualized actions seem to be still of enormous importance in our society. Experts even talk about a ritual euphoria. Do we use ancient rituals with roots deeply embedded in history or has the consumer society generated new rituals? Often we find phenomena, actions or practices, which could show ritual character. In this thesis, ritual-like patterns of activity in the fields of psychotherapy, migration, youth culture, social networks, the art market and the consumer world are examined to determine if they are just ordinary everyday practices or new rituals. An overview of research in rituals shows different fields of science concerning this complex issue. Rituals evolve dynamically and today it is extremely difficult to describe or to define the concept. According to current research a working definition consisting of five basic criteria was derived. The analysis has revealed that almost all the chosen examples can be described as rituals, or at least as new forms of ritualized practice as defined in the working definition. Ultimately consumption itself can also be described as a modern ritual. Shopping is a central part of consumer culture which industrial society ritualized to secure its own survival.</dc:description>
