<dc:title xml:lang="en">Something won, something lost: Exploring emergence and irreversibility through glacier ice</dc:title>

<dc:description xml:lang="en">In this work I set out to explore glacier ice as a material, although in fact I ended up exploring glacier ice as a process, within which ice crystals behave differently as a collective than they do individually. Single ice crystals reform themselves in a reciprocal process of self sculpture in which the forces and conditions within the glacier affect the size and orientation of individual crystals, and these crystal properties in turn define the emergent behavior of what the glacier can do – thus closing a circle that bridges the micro and macro scale. By reflecting on the forms and particularly the action of glacier ice I consider both emergent behavior (something won) and irreversibility (something lost) and the role such notions play in influencing our role in the wider human and non human world.</dc:description>
