<ns1:title language="en">Do Rubber Trees Dream of the Rainforest?</ns1:title>
<ns1:description language="de">"Do Rubber Trees Dream of the Rainforest" centers around a narrative involving two rubber trees – a commodified, typical office plant species. The study takes the reader on a journey of an interspecies human-rubber tree marriage and the Swiss constitution that explicitly protects the dignity of plants. Furthermore, it investigates the potential of using plants as models to explore theories of consciousness. The author builds a relationship with the two rubber trees, named Betty and Bossi, and reassesses the view of plants as mere backdrops in human and animal lives, proposing that plants might be sentient beings with agency. This work calls for a reevaluation of our relationship with the vegetal world, urging us to see plants as active constructors of our shared ecosystem. This is also the theoretical framework for an installation that posits two rubber trees as active observers of a video projection. The video blends ambient industrial and animal noises with observations of the two rubber trees during plant phenotyping - which involves collecting high-throughput data on plant shapes and colors that need to be deconvoluted with trained neural networks - with live imaging of cell divisions in plant stem cell domains using light-sheet microscopy, and drone and smartphone footage of trees in a natural environment. Thereby, the video juxtaposes perspectives of vegetal agencies, scale, time, and spiritual vs. technological approaches to stimulate a resonance with non-human consciousness.
