University of Applied Arts Vienna Comic-Transformationen: Ästhetische Umbrüche im Comic im Anschluss an Art Spiegelman und die Comic-Avantgarde der 1980er Jahre Die Diplomarbeit untersucht die Umbrüche im Comic, welche in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren das Erscheinungsbild des Mediums verändert haben. Ausgehend vom Gesamtwerk Art Spiegelman’s und anderen Schlüsselwerken können die Parameter der Transformationen nachvollzogen werden. Die Arbeit identifiziert und analysiert entscheidende Themenbereiche dieser Veränderungen. Dies beinhaltet neue Publikationsformate, Erzählweisen und ästhetische Experimente. Auf ihre jeweils spezifische Art wirken sich diese Veränderungen auf die Text-Bild-Relation, das grundlegende Element des Comics, aus. Die neuen Veröffentlichungsstrategien übertragen das Prinzip der Topografie der Comic-Seite auf das Layout-format der Publikationen. Durch eine neue Selbstwahrnehmung der Zeichner_innen als Autor_innen ihrer eigenen Geschichten entstehen neue Erzählweisen, wie die Autobiografie und die Reportage. Die ästhetischen Experimente der Comic-Avantgarde(n) interpretieren die Form des Comics neu. Dies führt zur aktuellen Pluralität innerhalb des Comics; diese reicht vom fotokopierten Heft bis zur fünfhundertseitigen Graphic Novel. The diploma thesis analyses the radical changes in comic books in the 1980s and 1990s that altered the medium’s appearance. The thesis explains the parameters of transformation starting from Art Spiegelman’s oeuvre and other key works. It identifies and analyses decisive subject areas of this transformation. This includes new publication formats, narratives and aesthetic experiments. In their own particular ways, each of these transformations have an impact on the relation between text and image, the central element of comics. New publication strategies transfer the topography principle of a comic page on the layout format of the publications. A new self-awareness of the illustrators as authors of their own stories leads to the development of new narrative styles such as the autobiography and the reportage. Aesthetic experiments of the comic avantgarde reinterpret the design of the comic.
