Gas Station, Social Design, Oil infrastructure, Carbon Form, Intervention, Urban Transformation Text Masterarbeit deu Seit 100 Jahren gibt es Tankstellen in Österreich. Sie bilden das materielle Erbe einer Architekturepoche, die noch auf Rohöl und grenzenloser Mobilität aufbaut, auf unendlicher Energie und fossilen Wohlstand. Hier spiegelt sich die Ambivalenz unserer fossilen Gesellschaft: Einerseits stehen sie für Effizienz und Fortschritt, andererseits verkörpern sie die Ursachen der Klimakrise in der Stadt. In Wien sind Tankstellen als so genannte Arkadentankstellen meist in Wohnbauten eingebettet und erzählen ihre ganz eigenen und unterschiedlichen Geschichten. Das Projekt „Multi Product Dispenser“ widmet sich im Besonderen der Johanna Garage, einer Arkadentankstelle in Wien Margareten und stellt Fragen nach der Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft dieser Tankstelle, die zugleich besonders wie typisch ist. Wir öffneten den Ort für parallele Nutzungen und zeigten damit, dass auch „Autotempel” Räume im Wandel sind und Veränderung im Lokalen passieren kann. Neben Interventionen zwischen den Zapfsäulen, zu denen die Nachbarschaft eingeladen wurde, beschäftigten wir uns mit kollektiven Erinnerungen, Erdölabhängigkeit und der sozialen Praxis des Tankens. Die Ausstellung fand am 12.01.2025 in der Johanna Garage statt. 100 years ago the first gas station was built in Austria. They represent the material legacy of an architectural era built on crude oil and boundless mobility, on infinite energy and fossil prosperity. These stations reflect the ambivalence of our fossil-based society: on the one hand, they symbolize efficiency and progress; on the other hand, they embody the causes of the climate crisis in urban areas. In Vienna, gas stations are often integrated into residential buildings and tell their own stories. The project “Multi Product Dispenser” focuses specifically on the Johanna Garage, an arcade gas station in Vienna’s 5th district, and raises questions about the past, present, and future of this station, which is both special and typical. We opened the site for parallel uses, demonstrating that even these „automobile temples“ are spaces in transition and that change can occur on a local scale. In addition to interventions between the fuel pumps, where the local community was invited to participate, we explored collective memories, oil dependency, and the social practice of refueling. The exhibition took place on January 12, 2025, at the Johanna Garage.
