<dc:description xml:lang="eng">During the archaeological excavations at the Memorial Site Hartheim Castle, Upper Austria, in 2001 and 2002 over 8,000 artifacts were recovered, including many plastics that once belonged to victims of the Nazi euthanasia and extermination facility at Hartheim (1940-1944). A significant part of the plastics collection, consisting of cellulose nitrate (CN), has been stored for many years in polyethylene (PE)-bags.
Clarifying the causes of damage shows that there are significant gaps in knowledge regarding the handling of archaeological plastics and that only a few practical guidelines are available. A series of tests examines the damage potential of storing CN in PE-bags and compare it with that of alternative storage systems. Appropriate handling strategies will be developed and compiled in the form of a practical handout.</dc:description>
