GESAMT-FILMDAUER: 80 Minuten</dc:description>

<dc:description xml:lang="en">A full-length feature film on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's »Faust. The First Part of the Tragedy« - from the perspective of Margarethe.

The official presentation of the diploma on June 23, 2026 will take place in the form of a »film preview« condensed to a total of fifteen minutes. The final minutes of this screening mark the absolute highlight of my entire time studying:
The lead actress of the film, Anne Wieben, will appear in person and perform the central, highly emotional aria of the film live before the examination committee. This unique event builds a
bridge between the pre-recorded film and the raw, immediate power of the performing arts.

The film is based on »Faust. The First Part of the Tragedy« by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as well as on Arrigo Boito's only completed opera »Mefistofele«, which in turn is based on Goethe's work.

The idea for this diploma project arose on an evening with the lead actress Anne Wieben. Following my music video »PIQUE DAME: LISA‘S KATHARSIS«, in which Anne Wieben is also vocally involved, another music video was supposed to be created. Our mutual ambition was a high musical quality and a haunting visual language.

In the course of my research for this planned follow-up video I dealt intensively with the libretto for »Mefistofele« by Arrigo Boito as well as with Goethe's »Faust. The First Part of the Tragedy«. Immediately I noticed the clear devaluation of what is, for me, the actual main protagonist, the character of »Gretchen«. I felt it was a disrespectful decision by Goethe to give such an important character a diminutive name in address. Also to portray her as »naive«. Therefore I made the decision to make the video about her, Margarethe (the »Gretchen«), alone. It quickly became clear that a short music clip would not be enough to tell her complex story with that respect which, in my opinion, she deserves.

The work on the screenplay began - and lasted a total of over a year and a half, because I had to reformulate several plot aspects. As in all my works, many experiences from my own life can furthermore be found reflected in this one.

It was important to me to clearly work out what role the mother takes on in the family dynamic since the absence of a male-read person. What consequences does life with a single mother, who had to adopt Austrian, patriarchal structures, have on the personal experience of Margarethe?

Margarethe received a new playing age of mid-thirties from me, because during the close study of »Faust. The First Part of the Tragedy« I had noticed Goethe's »pedophilic-erotic« approach, which I absolutely did not want to let flow into my work. I strongly condemn and reject this idea of the author. In order to distance myself even more from Goethe I have relocated the time in which the events take place to the seventies.
The strongly religious components in Goethe's book, which lead to the famous »Gretchenfrage« were primarily assigned to the mother by me.

I have furthermore decided to create the film in multiple languages. Each of the protagonist:s should speak in her:his native language. This decision had strong dramaturgical reasons, because the protagonist:s were supposed to talk to each other, but not listen to each other, but rather be trapped in their own perception.

Consequently the film comprises the two main languages: English and Swedish as well as the secondary languages German and Italian.

The submission includes a 15-minute condensed version of the film.
