phaidra.bibliothek.uni-ak.ac.at o:76092 Assisting as a mode of artistic deproduction Diese Dissertation untersucht Assistenz als Raum innerhalb der künstlerischen Produktion, dessen strukturelle Funktion darin besteht, Arbeit und Abhängigkeiten zu verschleiern, die die bürgerliche Subjektivität der Künstler*Innen stabilisieren. Sie analysiert, wie Assistenz so gestaltet werden kann, um diese Beziehungen und institutionellen Ressourcen neu zu konfigurieren. Ausgehend von der feministischen materialistischen Analyse reproduktiver Arbeit, insbesondere von Marina Vishmidts Auseinandersetzung mit Management und Maintenance sowie ihrem Begriff der “infrastructural critique“, wird das Konzept der Deproduktion als Methode zur Überwindung institutioneller Zwänge eingeführt. Deproduktion schlägt vor, Arbeits- und Zugangsflüsse umzulenken und Abhängigkeiten neu zu organisieren, wodurch der Anspruch der Kunst auf Autonomie zurückgewiesen wird. Diese Vorgehensweisen werden im Rahmen von zwei Projekten vorgeschlagen, die mit der Produktion von Wissen und der künstlerischen Subjektivität experimentieren. Der zentrale künstlerische Beitrag, “Zero Slack”, ist ein Roman, der die Beauftragung einer Assistentin sowie eines Finanzberaters umfasst und zugleich als Vertrag dient. Dadurch werden die Versprechen des Romans konkret und nicht nur metaphorisch. In Anlehnung an Joan Scotts Kritik der Erfahrung konstruiert der Text mehrere Subjektivitäten, die durch die von ihnen ausgeübte Arbeit organisiert sind. “Assistances”, ein gemeinsam geleitetes und organisiertes Forschungsprojekt und Seminar mit Christopher Weickenemeier, wurde als Gegenpraxis zu den von der Universität vorgeschlagenen individualisierenden Forschungsmethoden entwickelt. Während “Zero Slack“ vertikale Arbeitsverhältnisse inszeniert, nähert sich “Assistances“ den zentralen Forschungsfragen im Prozess des kollektiven Studiums so horizontal wie möglich. Der in der Dissertation entwickelte und angewandte theoretische Rahmen ist in diesem Prozess verwurzelt. This dissertation examines assisting as a site within artistic production whose structural role is to conceal the labour and dependencies that stabilise the bourgeois subjectivity of the artist. It analyses how assistance can be formulated to reconfigure and (mis)use those relations and institutional resources. Drawing on the lineage of feminist materialist analyses of reproductive labour, and particularly Marina Vishmidt’s work on management and maintenance and on infrastructural critique, the concept of deproduction is introduced as a method of working through institutional constraints. Deproduction implies redirecting flows of labour and access, and reorganising dependencies, thereby rejecting art’s claim to autonomy. These operations are proposed through two artistic research projects that experiment with knowledge production and artistic subjectivity. The main artistic contribution, “Zero Slack”, is a novel that explores the extraction of experience from the author’s past and involves hiring an assistant and a financial advisor to develop a deferred payment system, thereby functioning simultaneously as a contract. The novel makes its promises material, rather than metaphorical. Referring to Joan Scott’s critique of experience, the text constructs multiple subjectivities organised by the labour they perform. “Assistances,” a research project and seminar collaboratively led and organised with Christopher Weickenemeier, was developed as a counter-practice to the individuating methodologies of research proposed by the university. While “Zero Slack“ enacts vertical, employment-based relations, “Assistances” approaches the main research questions through collective study, as horizontally as possible.
