This\ndoctoral thesis investigates these challenges with a specific focus on calcareous stone heritage, aiming to\nbridge scientific research and practical conservation decision-making.\nThe thesis begins by outlining the broader context of climate-related risks to cultural heritage, explaining\nwhy changing environmental conditions represent a significant threat to stone monuments and reviewing\nstrategies currently discussed within the heritage sector. Calcareous stones are examined in detail,\nconsidering their historical use, material properties, and importance as heritage materials. Building on this\nfoundation, the principal deterioration mechanisms affecting outdoor calcareous stones are analysed, with\nparticular attention given to how these processes are expected to evolve under future climatic conditions.\nA central contribution of this work is the development and evaluation of methodologies for quantifying\nsurface recession in calcareous stones. The design of material sensors and exposure protocols\npresented in this thesis enables the assessment of changes in decay rates and forms the methodological\ncore of the research, linking conservation science and practice.\nThe final part of the thesis addresses practical conservation approaches. Selected preventive and\ninterventive measures relevant to emerging challenges are discussed, with particular emphasis on winter\nshelters, shelter coats, and water-repellent treatments. Their advantages, limitations, and potential risks\nare evaluated and illustrated through examples from practice.
