<ns1:description language="en">This thesis seeks to critically explore the emancipatory potential of self-governed schools to re-introduce the idea of self-government into debates relating to education policy and school development. There is a growing interest in progressive concepts for pedagogical and school reform, both within the private education sector as well as among public sector officials looking for new ideas; however, especially with the current rise of right-wing extremist parties worldwide, every demand for participation and direct democracy must be confronted with questions concerning the protection of minorities and the role of biased media and other sources of information, such as education.
For this purpose, this text brings together two positions: the educational practice of A.S. Neill’s self-governed Summerhill School, and Herbert Marcuse’s critical take on democracy as voiced in his essay Repressive Tolerance (1966).
The text will begin by outlining the educational principles and self-government system used at Summerhill through internal and external literary views. Subsequently, the main arguments of Repressive Tolerance will be presented and discussed in relation to the schooling practice at Summerhill in order to offer a deeper understanding of the potentials and blind-spots of the Summerhill self-government system through Marcuse’s critical perspective on a majoritarian democratic society and the solutions he offers. These cross references will show that the school is relatively well placed to realize Marcuse’s ideal democracy within its own community. At the same time, it fails to define what sort of participation the school or its alumni are to claim for themselves within a democratic society. Furthermore, while Summerhill rejects the values and structures of mainstream society, there has been little self-reflection on its own organically grown values and institutional power structures.
For questions on school development, the results of the discussion imply that any consideration of introducing self-government systems should be accompanied by a realistic and critical assessment of the existing power structures within a community or society, and the attempt at re-designing them.</ns1:description>
