<lom:description>

<lom:langstring xml:lang="en">This written component examines shame as a social and political mechanism that
regulates bodies, sexuality, and identity. It approaches shame as a cultural technology
that disciplines individuals through the internalisation of social norms embedded in
institutions, media, and everyday interactions.
The research combines theoretical analysis, artistic research, and a curated archive of
cultural material and lived experience. This hybrid approach allows different layers of
the topic to be addressed simultaneously: institutional frameworks such as religion,
colonial moral systems, and capitalism, alongside everyday practices of exposure,
ridicule, and self-surveillance. Contemporary consumer culture and digital media are
also analysed as sites where shame is produced and monetised through idealised bod-
ies, gender norms, and lifestyle expectations.
The artistic work, developed through the project Shame on Me, investigates embar-
rassment and bodily exposure through performative strategies that confront viewers
with their own reactions to socially regulated behaviour. It draws on an anonymous
collection of narratives, forming a montage-like archive that informs the work.
Rather than separating analysis and practice, the thesis operates through their entan-
glement. Shame appears as something that is both structurally produced and contin-
uously reproduced in everyday social exchanges through practices of judgment, expo-
sure, and correction. The research asks how artistic practice can intervene in these
dynamics by making shame visible and negotiable, and how that can be a crucial part
of dismantling contemporary regimes of the body. It suggests that working through
shame can expose the mechanisms through which bodies and identities are regulated,
opening space for alternative forms of relation and self-perception.</lom:langstring>
