Our identities are informed less by concrete family, cultural, or historical legacies than by our attitude towards them – by the meanings we ascribe to them. And this attitude always has something to do with the present. How do we deal with the heritage of historical and ideological contradictions? In her work Basma Antina Zlatkova takes a collection of fabrics she inherited from her grandmother as a departure point for an artistic exploration of questions related to origin, culture, authenticity, and property. The colourful printed fabrics become an allegory for historical and family constructions, which the artist reinterprets and makes tangible through a haptic-cognitive approach. Was wir wirklich vererben sind Mythen. Unsere Identitäten sind weniger von konkreten familiären, kulturellen oder historischen Hinterlassenschaften als viel mehr von unserer Haltung dazu geprägt – von den Bedeutungen, die wir ihnen zuschreiben. Und diese Haltung hat immer etwas mit dem Jetzt zu tun. Wie gehen wir mit der Erbschaft geschichtlicher und ideologischer Gegensätze um? Mit der Arbeit Basma macht Antina Zlatkova die vererbte Stoffsammlung ihrer Großmutter zum Ausgangspunkt einer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen von Herkunft, Kultur, Authentizität und Besitz.
