<ns1:description language="en">The present diploma thesis examines the conflict between immaterial values and the materialistic world view. It is commonly argued that the way capitalist societies function is based on an ideology which overestimates material values. However, the disregard of immaterial values required by capitalist societies´ inherent focus on profit-making, deserves to be examined further. This thesis explores the hypothesis that this conflict of values, and more specifically the reduced importance of immaterial values, is at the very heart of a number of the important problems of our times, such as the overexploitation of natural resources and resulting international conflicts. Moreover, the connection will be discussed between capitalist societies´ disregard of the metaphysical and both, collective and personal crises, which manifest themselves not only in the collapse of national economies but also in worldwide rise in the incidence of mental illnesses.
These assumptions are supported by several philosophical and psychological theories. The Critical Theory by Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno states that in the pursuit of domination over nature, rational thought has become so completely dominant that it even instrumentalized man himself. Abraham Maslows pyramid of human needs, though, posits that man has not just for material, but also immaterial needs. Unfortunately, metaphysical needs cannot be met by the free market, but instead are used for and subjected to the pursuit of profit maximization. Viktor Frankls existential analysis explains why this 'market failure' inevitably causes feelings of meaninglessness in the individual, as it is human nature to strive for meaning that can be found only in immaterial and moral values.
This study is intertwined with an analysis of the Spanish film El Olivo (2016), which revolves around the conflict of values described above. In the film, this conflict is illustrated with a story about a 2000-year-old olive tree. Therefore, the last part of this thesis is dedicated to an analysis of the tree symbol, examining ancient myths in which the tree was already used as a carrier of metaphysical meaning.</ns1:description>
