Description (eng)
This Diplom comes from a personal experience. As all the things which we feel as ours, my decision to make my studies in Industrial Design in the Universitaet fuer angewandte Kunst here in Wien has left a very strong mark in my way to look at the world. After my studies in Architecture in Venice, infact, I decided after an interesting travel to move to the Austrian capital, discovering with big surprice how Vienna has not only the fascinating historical background that we all know, but it is also a city with a new spirit, a town with a powerfull push to the future, like a sort of fatal need to find a connection between this ist precious inheritance and the changes of society, economy, arts and people.
Nowhere in my opinion, as in Vienna, you can see the big link between what has happened and what is going to come. Strong of these impressions and these years of studies and life here in Wien, I decided to make my Diplom exactly about this sensation. My attention went immediatly to the most typical Viennese atmosphere, the „Kaffee Haus“, not only as a physical space in which people moves, lives their everyday experiences, interacts with the other persons, but Kaffee Haus as a way to look at life, a foundamental break during the day, in which you can feel some way at home.
Kaffee Haus is culture, is history, but it is also the place in which you can find people from all over the world, you can relax, think, work, without never feeling isolated.
Coffee in this conception is not the chaotic experience of the Italian Espresso tradition, but it is something more connected to an habit that can´ t be renounced, a sort of ritual that every Viennese takes in his own day.
So, starting to these considerations, I have analysed the all historical events that interested the Wiener Kaffee Haus and I have tried to build an idea of society in the past and today, which kind of people were visting the coffee houses in the past and which are they now, which are the main element talking about interior design, materials, colors. Later I analysed what already offers now the market of coffee around the world, to see if there is really another place that can gives you all the sensations of a Wiener Kaffee Haus. And I discovered that there is not, or better not with the same peculiarities, the same history, the same importance for a big city life.
At the end of this reaserch, I have asked to myself: do really people need to go faster and faster every moment of their lives? Do persons really want to stay chaotic and speed also drinking a coffee, in the only pause of the afternoon? I said to myself, probably not. Probably they need to have an object that can give them all the Viennese tradition of coffee in a simple product, very familiar for materials but in the mean time different from the old classical set that you can see still in every Wiener Kaffee Haus.
I imagined the solid tradition of coffee that meets the very frenetic life which almost everybody has now. My project would like to stay in the middle of the speed that we all are used to and that different, short but kind pleasure, to know when to stop for a while. And to take a little bit back the time for ourselves.
