Description (eng)
To Cluj On the one hand, my work deals with my journey and my two month long stay in Romania in the summer of 2005, which brought me back "to Cluj". Here, both my thoughts and my curiosity are focussed onto my native city Cluj-Napoca, back to the early days of my childhood and into today's Romania. On the other hand, it deals with the time after Cluj, that is after the year 1984: the time spent in Germany until the year 2002 and the time spent in Austria to this day. Things experienced in my early childhood are mixed with new impressions. Faded pictures, which I carried within myself until my trip to Romania, became vivid through the familiar but still unknown environment, which I thought to remember myself of and which I treid to rediscover. I searched for these elapsed pictures and tried to document them with up-to-date pictures and to deposit them in my work respectively, in order to establish a connection between the past and the present. Alongside the pictures, I started drawing outlines to connect my faded memories to the newly collected impressions. I converted these outlines with graphic prints at a later date. The etchings show matrons on their way from a small village to a larger nearby city in order to go shopping. Their bearing is very characteristic: they are rather heavyset and corpulent, their movements are slow. Mostly, they stand firmly on the ground, as if nothing could ever knock them over. The slightly bent back is stretched and one or both of their fists are stemmed into the haunches as they pause. The photo litographies describe the path of this very specific female character, the traces she leaves, the conversations she conducts and the observations she makes in her surrounding environment. In equal measure, the photo litographies describe the near surroundings of the city through which the matron travels, to the contemplator: Behind the anonymous' buildings walls live modern families, who inwardly have long ago modernised their outwardly decaying homes. The anonymity of these buildings itself is lifted by the life inside their walls, illustrated by the correlating windows which characterize the social contacts of its inhabitants among themselves. Several persons step into the pictures' foreground in order to give small insights into the events.
