Die Arbeit verfolgt den Weg von der brachialen Lobotomie der 1930er Jahre bis zur heute gefeierten transkraniellen fokussierten Ultraschallstimulation (tFUS) und fragt, warum trotz technischer Verfeinerung dieselben Heilsversprechen und Kontrollphantasien fortleben. Gestützt auf die Experimente von Alfred Lee Loomis und den Brüdern Fry zeigt sie, wie Schallwellen als präzise, reversible Alternative zum neurochirurgischen Schnitt vermarktet wurden, obwohl ihr Langzeitrisiko ungeklärt blieb. Mithilfe von Ernst Kapps Organprojektion deutet die Studie beide Verfahren als Artefakte, die das Gehirn vom defekten Organ zum steuerbaren System umcodieren. Das Fazit fordert eine historisch informierte Ethik: Innovation gilt erst dann als Fortschritt, wenn sie vergangene Irrwege reflektiert, reale Bedürfnisse prüft und ihre Versprechen einlöst.

The study traces the path from the brutal lobotomy of the 1930s to today’s celebrated transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS) and asks why, despite technical refinement, the same promises of salvation and fantasies of control endure. Drawing on the experiments of Alfred Lee Loomis and the Fry brothers, it shows how sound waves were marketed as a precise, reversible alternative to the neurosurgical incision, even though their long-term risks remained unresolved. Employing Ernst Kapp’s concept of organ projection, the study interprets both procedures as artefacts that recode the brain from a defective organ into a controllable system. The conclusion calls for a historically informed ethics: innovation counts as progress only when it reflects past dead ends, examines real needs, and fulfils its promises.
