Die Schwelle im Kraftfeld von Bildräumen

Ausgehend von der Metapsychologie des Bildes untersucht diese Diplomarbeit die paradoxe Bildstruktur, die Georges Didi-Huberman mit dem Begriff der Schwelle assoziiert und kontextualisiert diese in dem weiteren Zusammenhang von Sichtbarkeit, Blickgeschehen und einer Logik des Übergangs, wie sie sich im Bild als Schwelle zeigt. Mit der Begriffsperson des Schwellensuchers, wie sie vom Werk Peter Handkes inspiriert wurde, werden im ersten Abschnitt in mehreren Kapiteln zur Schwellenkunde diverse etymologische, kulturgeschichtliche, mythologische, geologische, psychologische, philosophische, wahrnehmungsphysiologische, ethnologische, topographische etc. Kontexte der Schwelle als eines Begriffs aus der Topographie des Zwischen nachgezeichnet, um die generelle Bedeutung und Funktion sowie die spezifische Räumlichkeit des Schwellenbegriffs als Liminalität, Kraftfeld, Passage, Zwischenraum, Übergangszone etc. präsent zu machen. In den explizit bildtheoretischen Überlegungen werden diese Befunde hinsichtlich der Medialität von Bildern fruchtbar gemacht. Es wird herausgestellt, inwiefern Bilder auf der Schwelle zwischen Selbst und Anderem, Grund und Figur, Materie und Immateriellem, Körper und Geist, Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnis, Oberfläche und Sinn, Bildvehikel und Bildobjekt einen kulturstiftenden Raum der Bedeutsamkeit eröffnen. Schließlich werden anhand ausgewählter Bildbeispiele aus verschiedenen Epochen der Kunstgeschichte drei spezifische Konstellationen von Bildschwellen analysiert. Die verschiedenen Spielarten von Liminalität – Immersion, Übergang, Grenze, Transzendenz, Tabu, Entgrenzung – werden in direkter Auseinandersetzung mit einzelnen Kunstwerken und den ihnen entsprechenden Raumkonstellationen untersucht. Diese kommen unter anderem als Schwellenräume oder Raumschwellen zum Vorschein und verweisen auf die Tragweite eines ästhetischen Begriffs der Schwelle im Kraftfeld von Bildräumen.

Based on the Metapsychologie des Bildes from George Didi-Huberman this text deals with the paradoxical structure of images associated with the notion of the threshold in context within the field of visibility and the logic of passage. With the Begriffsperson of the thresholdseeker, as inspired by the work of Peter Handke, several contexts of the threshold as a concept from the topography of the intermediate are traced back in various directions regarding etymological, cultural- historical, mythological, geological, psychological, philosophical, physiological, ethnological, topographical and other fields. This happens to present the general meaning and function as well as the specific spatiality of the threshold as a force field of liminality, passage, space, transition zone etc. In explicitly confronting these findings with a theory of images, we regard the modality of images insofar as they highlight their generative force within or on the threshold between self and others, ground and figure, matter and immaterial, body and mind, perception and knowledge, surface and meaning, image vehicle and image object. Finally, three specific constellations of images as thresholds are analysed on the basis of selected examples from various periods in art history. The different varieties of liminality - immersion, transition, border, transcendence, taboo, borderlessness - are examined in direct engagement with individual works of art and the corresponding spatial constellations. Among other things, these appear as thresholdspaces or roomthresholds and refer to the scope of an aesthetic concept of the threshold in the force field of imaginary spaces.
