In der vorliegenden Arbeit untersuche ich das trans-nationale Phänomen Muay Thai. Dies wird sowohl als Kampfsportart als auch im sozioökonomischen und (pop)kulturellen Feld betrachtet. Als Quelle greife ich auf das online verfügbare Material (Text, Video, ...) der US-amerikanischen Muay Thai-Kämpferin Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu zu. Dabei verstehe ich das dokumentarische Material von Duuglas-Ittu als Ergebnis einer teilnehmenden Beobachtung. Anhand dieses Materials nähere ich mich dem im Kampf vorherrschenden/beobachtbaren Spiel zwischen inszenierter Dominanz und physischer Gewaltanwendung. Der Fokus der Untersuchung liegt auf spezifischen Formen performativer Akte im Kontext einer thailändischen Muay Thai Praxis und wie diese Bedeutungen erhalten und generieren. Zur kritischen Einordnung der aus der Quelle herausgearbeiteten Punkte ziehe ich Ansätze der Spieltheorie sowie Beiträge aus der Sportpsychologie und -philosophie hinzu.

In this paper, I examine the trans-national phenomenon of Muay Thai. This is considered both as a martial art and in the socio-economic and (pop)cultural field. As a source I access the online available material (text, video, ...) of the US-American Muay Thai fighter Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu. In doing so, I understand Duuglas-Ittu's documentary material as the result of participant observation. On the basis of this material I approach the prevailing/observable play between staged dominance and physical use of violence in fighting. The focus of the investigation is on specific forms of performative acts in the context of a Thai Muay Thai practice and how these receive and generate meanings. I draw on approaches from game theory as well as contributions from sports psychology and philosophy to critically frame the points that emerge from the source.
