Medieval Panel Paintings in Carinthia. Scientific analyses, Conservation and Restoration of a small Tryptich from the Church of St. Lorenzen The thesis focuses on a small triptych from the Church of Saint Lorenz in Carinthia, dated about 1500. The altar is composed of two generously overpainted wings of high painting quality, a badly damaged empty shrine with uncompleted veil board. Scientific analyses were carried out on wood, pigments and binding media. The main topic of the practical work features the consolidation of the paint film, reduction of the disturbing varnish accretions and removal of large overpainted areas. The final step was to integrate all missing parts of the painting and the frame by retouching.An important chapter of the thesis deals with possible methods of removing large areas of overpainting. Several different solvents and gels have been tested for their removal capacity and then effectively used direct on the framework.A main part of the theoretical investigation was the research on the origin, classification and iconographical program of this specific triptych.
