This collection is an exploration of my Heritage. It is inspired by the life story of my father, who, after he had met
my mother in Egypt, migrated to Austria. My German mother always wore the pants in my parents’ relationship
and, incidentally, also at their wedding. My mother’s wedding suit pants, which were quite a statement for a
woman who got married in the 1980s, are a great source of inspiration in my collection and are worked into the
collection and run through it like a red thread.
The stories my father has told me of his time in the Egyptian military and several wars are translated into various
details throughout the collection: A Mans’ Uniform shirt is reappropriated to a female body. Breast insets are
added like elements of an armour. The violence of military wear is decoded by redefining its purpose with a
feminist approach, featuring tampon holders instead of ammunition belts.
Intricate knitwear literally exposes the holes in my father’s story and in my own knowledge about my cultural
heritage. Most knitted pieces are fully fashioned, meaning the holes have been part of the piece and pattern
from the beginning. Other holes are cut and created and reappear in a variety of tailored garments. This comes
to a climax in the knitted wedding dress.
By bedazzling the abstracted Austrian coat of arms, I’m bringing my queerness into the mix. The Austrian Eagle
attains a second head like it did during the Habsburg Monarchy, representing my very own dichotomy while also
representing both my parents and heritages.
The military influence is repeated in some of the footwear but again, the violent, and militant undertone of the
boot is broken by a gemstone embroidery. Additionally, I replace the conservative connotation of traditional
Austrian footwear by giving it a colorful bedazzled touch along with my name HASSAN.
